Native to the mountains of India, growing in the Himalayas, Nepal, India, and China, Spikenard is a tender flowering herb with pink bell-shaped flowers, clustered in umbels on top of a long green stem, with dark to light elongated or oval shaped leaves, and underground rhizomes and roots. The essential oil is steam distilled from the crushed rhizomes and roots, and is a deep, red-orange colour. This oils scent is very sweet and intense, fresh pea-like with tones of fresh cut grass, and slightly woody. Added to vegetable oil, non-perfumed cream or lotion, Spikenard is wonderful for mature skin. This essential oil also eases panic attacks and calms the flow of breathing, it balances the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system, eases anxiety, calms restlessness, and encourages a sense of feeling ‘grounded’, among many other wonderful qualities
You will find deeper detail about this essential oil in my books, Essential Oils for Mindfulness and Meditation, and Essential Oils for the Whole Body
